Our Story

About Us

ESLR Translations LLC offers French-to-English translation services with a special focus on financial texts. My name is Judy Bard and I have been translating professionally for over 20 years. My experience includes stints in-house in two different equity research departments, and I have been freelancing full time since 2011.

Translation requires more than just fluency in two languages. Translators must be excellent writers in their target language. They must retain the flavor and style of their source text. They must adapt to their target audience. They need research skills for new terms and concepts. They must be able to work collaboratively with their clients.

My philosophy of translation is simple: translations should accurately convey the French but sound natural in English. In my work, I always come back to the text and constantly stop to ask myself if the English correctly reflects the French. I revise and edit my translations multiple times to ensure consistency and readability. Accuracy and attention to detail are my calling cards.

Our Founder

Judy Bard

Currently based in Queens, New York, I grew up in Massachusetts and hold a bachelor’s degree in French and Theatre from Oberlin College. I also earned a Certificate in Translation from NYU’s School of Professional Studies. I began studying French in the seventh grade and made my first trip to France as an exchange student in high school. I also studied in Paris my junior year of college and then lived there for several years after I graduated. When I am not working, I enjoy learning other languages, seeing plays and exploring my city.

Our Heritage

ESLR Translations LLC

This photo is of my grandmother (on the far left) and her three sisters, who grew up in Belgium in the early 1900s. The name ESLR in my company stems from the first letter of each of their first names. Like me, all the sisters were multilingual, though they learned new languages out of necessity as they moved from country to country. While I learned my additional languages by choice, I like to think that they would be pleased to see me carrying on the family tradition of multilingualism.

You provide me with a document in French and I provide you with a document in English!

French-to-English Editing

Your document has already been translated but you would like a second set of eyes. I will check for errors and omissions and make sure the English reads fluently and consistently.

Editing

Your document was written in English by a non-native speaker. I can revise it to suit your needs: you may want only a light edit for spelling and grammar, or a more in-depth reworking for a more fluent English text.

Document Review

You may have a large number of documents in French and need to know what sort of information they contain. I can review and summarize each document to help you decide which ones require full translation.

Other types of financial and general documents

  • I will need to see your document before I agree to translate it. I will never translate a document if I do not believe I can do it well (for example, medical and legal translations are outside my areas of expertise).

  • Translation services are charged on a per word basis and editing services are charged on a per hour basis. Here as well, I will need to see your document before I can provide a quote. Surcharges may apply for rush jobs or documents that will require significant formatting, etc.

  • For individual clients, I generally require a partial upfront payment for all projects. I am happy to discuss alternative payment plans with you for specific projects.

  • I do not work with machine translation or AI but I do use computer-assisted translation (“CAT”) tools, such as Trados Studio. These tools help ensure consistency across multiple translations and allow me to create a glossary just for you. Please contact me if you have any questions about these tools or the translation process.

  • I work best when I have as much information from you as possible. Please provide me with any glossaries and style sheets you may use, along with any reference documents and specific instructions. If you have a translation that you were not happy with, please let me know why so I don’t make the same mistakes. I may have questions once I get started and I will work with you to address them at your convenience.

  • I always suggest that you have another translator edit or review my work. While I translate every document to the absolute best of my abilities, industry best practices recommend a second review.
